Personal Productivity - iPhone Apps

This must be the week of productivity for the iPhone. I’ve been asked several times this week for list of iPhone productivity apps I use, most recently in a comment I made in response to an only slightly-related thread.

So before we get back to product stuff — which I have a post coming soon — here are 10 iPhone-specific apps that could help you on the go. Many cost a little or a lot, but I’ve found in the App Store you get what you pay for…

  • Things. $9.99 to-do app syncs via Wifi back to a Mac client or can be used on its own. I’ve tried many paid and free apps here; I am a GTD guy, and this one fits me.
  • Evernote. Free app (there are tiers) used to collect digital stuff, like meeting notess, PDFs, research, etc. Syncs back to iPhone via evernote.com or by a free desktop app.
  • 1Password. Free client to store passwords, cards, etc. Protected very well by phone password, app open pwd, then card pwd. 256-bit encrypt. Syncs back to the $29.95 Mac client via WiFi (you’ll want the client, too — the app adds functionality to your browsers to store site info).
  • Byline. $4.99 app providing two-way sync with Google Reader. Works offline.
  • BeejiveIM. Like Adium IM on the Mac, only mobile. Works with MobileMe to let you know if someone’s contacting you. Expensive at $15.99 now (has gone up!), so only get if you need mobile IM.
  • Remote. Controlling iTunes from my iPhone is an iNoBrainer.
  • Google. Free. Voice and auto-suggest are well done.
  • iPhlix. $2.99 app providing Netflix sync. I seem to never be at a computer when someone says, “Have you seen…?”
  • Amazon.com. Good for on-the-go research.
  • Tweetie. Best of the Twitter apps with multi-account support (I speak for my company quite a bit). $2.99.
