Auto-Starting Video
Internet product managers — we should adopt rules for internet video as it pertains to auto-starting playback. For our users.
My position:
If the user initiates video — as in clicking on a link clearly marked as video via icon or text — auto play the video. It saves the user a step. Example: CharlotteObserver.com, of course.
If you as site owner have video on your home page or a random page as part of the overall experience, do not start automatically. The user will be shaken. If you must, leave the audio muted. Example of the worst offense (audio on, auto-playback): ESPN.com.
